William “Bill” Merchant was an Alabama native, born and bred. He sat alone in his private-sector, government-contractor office, leaning back in his chair and enjoying a high-end cigar, thinking that there was nowhere else he’d rather be in that moment.

Merchant hailed from Huntsville, a city in the Appalachian region of northern Alabama. He was born there, had spent his entire life and career there, and was determined to retire and die there. A self-proclaimed “true US patriot,” Merchant couldn’t imagine living anywhere else on God’s green earth. His beloved city, which was home to important establishments like the Redstone Arsenal, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the United States Army Aviation and Missile Command, and a major operational support headquarters of the FBI, filled him with national and southern patriotic pride. It was the only place in the world where Merchant most wanted to spend his time, especially surrounded by his dear wife, their kids and spouses, and all of his grandkids. He was beyond proud that all of them had remained in Huntsville over the years.

Merchant wasn’t one to enjoy business and personal travel, but he knew he had to board a plane later that afternoon to fly to the Northeast. His colleague, close friend, and fellow patriot, Frederick Howell, had called an important in-person meeting.

And Merchant knew he had to be there.
